Mundens, st helena
A derelict Victorian fort, strategically located on the headland overlooking and adjacent to Jamestown, Mundens was identified by PLC as a potential opportunity for a new luxury hotel/resort, correctly recognising both its unique location and role in the island's cultural history.
A secondary but equally important factor was Munden's potential for bridging the physical and social disparity imposed by the local geography standing between Jamestown and the smaller settlement at Rupert's Bay. PLC addressed this issue directly by exploring radical new transport links between these areas and anchoring them around Munden's, whilst incorporating its views and period features into a new destination for visitors to the island. This twofold approach had the purpose of both increasing St Helena's viability as a tourist destination and allowing fast and simple movement between the surrounding area, ultimately encouraging economic and community growth.
